Trade-offs and the Production Possibility Frontier
Trade-offs & the
Production Frontier.
The production possibility frontier transforms scarcity into a map. Explore feasible combinations, productive efficiency, opportunity cost and economic growth.
Observe
See the constraint.
More of one output means
less of another.
A region has limited labour, capital, land, energy and knowledge. If all resources are fully and efficiently employed, increasing healthcare capacity may require fewer resources for transport infrastructure. The frontier makes this constraint visible.
A REGIONAL CHOICE
If a regional budget and workforce are fixed, what must be sacrificed to produce one additional public service?
Think
Map possible combinations.
A frontier separates
the feasible from the impossible.
Points on the frontier use existing resources efficiently. Points inside it are feasible but inefficient because resources are unemployed or misallocated. Points outside it cannot be reached with current resources and technology.
Efficient
More of one good requires less of the other.
Inefficient
Output can rise without an immediate sacrifice.
Unattainable
Current capacity cannot produce this combination.
Opportunity Cost of ΔX = |ΔY / ΔX|The slope of the PPF measures how much Y must be forgone for an additional unit of X.
Analyse
Move along the frontier.
Choose a point on
the production frontier.
Move the slider to allocate capacity toward infrastructure. The simulated frontier is bowed outward, so the opportunity cost rises as resources increasingly shift toward infrastructure.

Allocation
HEALTHCARE OUTPUT75
The next 5 infrastructure units cost approximately 8 healthcare units.
Apply
Interpret economic change.
Movement and growth are
different economic events.
A movement along the same frontier reallocates existing productive capacity and therefore creates a trade-off. An outward shift expands capacity through investment, education, technological progress or improved institutions.
Budget reallocation
Engineers and funds move from hospital construction to rail infrastructure.
Capacity is unchanged; the output mix changes.
Productivity improvement
Better technology allows the same resources to produce more healthcare and infrastructure.
Previously unattainable combinations become feasible.
Decide
Test the model.
Where is productive
inefficiency?
A point lies inside a region’s PPF while some workers and machinery remain unemployed.
MODULE 04 · CHECKPOINT
You can now map
economic trade-offs.
The PPF distinguishes feasibility from efficiency, reveals opportunity cost, and shows whether change reallocates existing capacity or expands it.
